We have invited speakers to share their varied experiences with delegates and to inspire principals to “think out of the box”, to broaden horizons, to dream more and in turn inspire and motivate educators and learners in their schools to achieve more.

Sihle Khumalo
After spending 10 years in the corporate world Sihle gave up a lucrative job as a risks managerat the Port of Durban to take a break and travel through Africa from Cape to Cairo on public transport. He describes the trip as “a once in a life time exercise in madness”. The trip culminated in the writing of his book which describes his journey fraught with discomfort, mishaps, ecstasy, disillusionment, discovery and astonishing human encounters. Max Du Preez describes Sihle as a “ an astute observer, a lover of people and a man with a fine sense of humour”. Sihle is certainly a man who “dreams big”.

 

 

Igno Van Niekerk
Igno is businessman, freelance journalist, motivational speaker and a photographer. He began his career as an English teacher and then moved into the business world when he joined Liberty Life where he is currently a Training Manager. He holds a masters degree in History from the University of Free State and is an accredited Financial Planner. He lectures part time at the University of the Free State presenting modules on Strategy, Company Analysis and Leadership to Masters students. His passion is for  storytelling and photography. His photos have been published in many international journals.

 

 

David Williams
David is a former teacher, an author, a broadcaster and a journalist. Until May 2010 he was deputy editor of The Financial Mail where he worked for 18 years. He is a prolific broadcaster on topics such a sport, politics and business and can often be heard on Radio Highveld, SAFM, MNet and Summit TV. For two years he was director of communication at Wits University and for five years Communications Manager for SAB Ltd (SABMiller). He is currently Director of King Edward Vll School and has done much work in assisting schools in rural areas of the Eastern Cape. He shares his views on what constitutes “Quality Public Education”.

 

Dr Gcina Mhlope-Bekker
Gcina is an award winning poet, playwright, performer, motivational speaker and South Africa’s best loved story teller. Gcina has been writing and performing on the stage for the past 23 years. She is the author of the award winning book “Have you seen Sandile?” which is used as a set book in many high schools. Gcina feels that well-known traditional tales of Africa have world wide appeal and a universal message.

 

 

 

John Gatherer
John has over 30 years in Human Resource Management and Leadership experience having held senior posts at the Anglo  American Corporation and the De Beers Group where he was involved in coaching and mentoring over a period of 16 years. He recently joined Debbie Craig at Catalyst Consulting as Chief Operating Officer. Among others their clients include Accenture,
Transnet, Eskom, De Beers and Engen. They have co-authored a book entitled “I am Talent” which focuses on how students can optimize their personal effectiveness in the work place and make their education relevant.
 

 

BREAK-AWAY SESSIONS

Dr Kim Domingo
Dr Domingo is a psychiatrist who runs a busy private practice in Durban North. Her special interests are in the field of maternal health, child and adolescent psychiatry. She will be sharing her experience in “dealing with the new age parent”.

Advocate J M Reyneke
Mariette Reyneke is senior lecturer in Law of Procedure and Evidence at the University of the Free State. Her topic: “Discipline in schools and in particular the concept of restorative justice”.

Professor Rika Joubert
Rika is associate professor in the Department of Education Management and Policy Studies at the University of Pretoria and Director of the Interuniversity Centre for Law, Leadership and Policy. She lectures education law in particular safety in schools and the legal implications.

Alison Kitto
Alison is retired teacher and ex-principal who currently serves on the Mathematics Curriculum Panel and was involved in the drawing up of the CAPS document. Alison shares her experience of effective mathematics
teaching.

Hans Scriba
Hans is managing director of the Sharks Academy in Durban. Along with a few Sharks stars he will speak about the benefits of running sports programmes in schools and how sport can change lives.

Mike Saunders
Mike Saunders is an internet strategy consultant and a social media coach. He encourages principals to embrace social media and explores the impact that social media has had on schools and businesses.
